My official start date at UND is August 1, but we're off and running as a research group for Fall 2024! I'm excited to welcome my first two graduate students - Mark McGarry, Jr. and Sydney Walters.
Mark grew up near Houston, TX and has been hooked on meteorology since the 2005 Hurricane Season. He brings a unique excitement for numerical weather prediction to UND, dipping his toes in several research and operations settings while earning his B.S. from the University of Northern Colorado. Mark and I will investigate the interaction between tropical cyclones and wind shear across a suite of climate models.
Sydney is heading to UND after a year and a half working for WeatherNews, Inc. in Norman, OK as an Operational Marine Meteorologist/Voyage Planner. She earned her B.S. from Ohio University, where she was heavily involved in her local AMS chapter, public outreach initiatives, and mentoring first-year students. Her choice to head back to school was motivated by a love of learning and teaching, and an interest in exploring career possibilities in academia. With this in mind, Sydney will spend her first year as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, while we study hurricane structure and climatology using a blend of satellite and dropsonde observations.
Head to the Group page to learn more about Mark and Sydney, and to connect with me/explore future opportunities to work together!
